Thesis
- No executive order, IHO decision, or USGS/GNIS change renaming Lake Ontario exists or has been credibly proposed; renaming it would also require Canadian-side complications absent in the Gulf case, making spontaneous action by Google in 3 days near-implausible.
- Time decay is decisive: with ~3 days to resolution, even a surprise executive order today would almost certainly not propagate to the majority of US Google Maps users by Aug 31, given the ~1-2 week lag observed for Gulf of America.
- The 29% market price vs my ~3% estimate is best explained by narrative momentum from the Gulf of America precedent and low-liquidity meme trading, not by any concrete signal of an impending rename.
Base rate
Google Maps has never unilaterally renamed a major international geographic feature absent an official government action; even the Gulf of America change only followed a federal executive order and GNIS update, with weeks of implementation lag.
What would prove this wrong
A signed executive order or official USGS/Board on Geographic Names decision renaming Lake Ontario in the next 72 hours, which would raise my estimate substantially though implementation lag would still cap it.
